All Hands On Deck

How do you take an underperforming unit - team, department, office or company - that has run aground and get it moving forward?

In ALL HANDS ON DECK, Peter J. Boni shows any leader or aspiring leader exactly what to do. Following his advice, recognition and rewards come quickly. It even allows leaders without an MBA or Oxbridge education to leapfrog over those who have superior credentials or stronger ties to the old boys' network.

Peter's own career is the best illustration of his methods. A former special operations infantry officer and decorated combat veteran, Boni became a high-tech CEO of a wide variety of companies during a 30-year business career, leading many of them through the varying stages of growth, maturity, trouble and renewal.

Boni shows you how to use his scars of experience to rapidly advance your own career. Through his own experiences and detailed case studies, ALL HANDS ON DECK clearly illustrates how to:

Create your plan and gain the buy-in of critical constituents

Kick off the plan boldly, with your team completely aligned to achieve its critical success factors

Execute the plan, overcome obstacles and produce stellar, recognition-worthy results

About the Author

eter J. Boni has a pedigree he's earned over a 40+ year career, 31 of them being an organizational captain. He has advanced by taking on the tough assignments of repositioning organizations that had run aground. During his career, he added nearly $5 billion of value as a science and technology CEO, consultant, director, and private equity/venture capital investor.

Over a decade apart, in different regions and in separate categories, he was twice cited in Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year competition, most recently in 2011 as Master Entrepreneur in Philadelphia. He has occasionally commentated for varying programs featured on CNBC, Fox Business, and The Street.com and has been the subject of articles written by The Wall Street Journal and Investor Business Daily.

In May 2013, the author retired from Safeguard Scientifics (NYSE: SFE) after more than seven years as CEO. During his tenure, he repositioned the near-death holding company (which fell in spectacular fashion with the burst of the internet bubble) to focus on segments of science and technology. His team completed three IPOs and sales to strategic buyers such as Oracle, Eli Lilly, Shire, McKesson, Beckton Dickenson, Parametric Technology Corp., Teva Pharmaceuticals and GE, resulting in ~ $1 billion of exits thus far. In that period, Safeguard's returns performed in venture capital's top tier; its debt to equity ratio improved from 1:1 to 1:8. With net cash achieving record levels, its stock hit a decade high, far outperforming The Russell 2000 and S & P 500, on a 6X increase in trading volume, while covering analysts leaped from 1 to 7 and institutional ownership grew from 25% to 75%.

Just before joining Safeguard, the author served as an operating partner at Advent International, a leading global private equity firm and a top-quartile performer managing over $20 billion. Over a previous 22-year period as CEO of several technology companies (public, private, IPO), his firms were listed among the Inc. 500 five times, the Software 100 three times, and the Fast 50 and the Fortune 1000 twice. Earlier, he held Fortune 500 executive assignments in sales, marketing, and general management.

The author has experienced dozens of mergers and acquisitions as both a buyer and a seller. He has presided over $1B of IPO, secondary or private financings; he has served on the boards of directors 25 public and private financial, healthcare and technology firms as chairman, independent director, committee head and/or CEO-coach. He was chairman of TechAmerica, the technology industry's flagship trade association, providing state, federal, and international lobbying services to its 1000+ company membership, to include several of the world's largest technology firms.

Today, Boni serves as Chairman on the national board of The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), which has brought entrepreneurship training to 600,000 poor, inner city youth in 21 U.S. states and twelve countries. He is founding co-chairman of its Philadelphia branch. Some proceeds of his book will be donated to NFTE.

In addition to a BA from University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Boni earned a Rice Paddy MBA in leadership on a "full scholarship," courtesy of Uncle Sam. A decorated military veteran, he spent 15 months in combat as a special operations infantry officer. Throughout his business career, the author has applied "lessons of leadership through adversity" from that life-altering experience. For example, he's learned to never underestimate the importance of attracting, retaining, and rewarding well-trained, capable people who can think out of the box, navigate complexity, and work as a team--themes throughout All Hands on Deck: Navigating Your Team Through Crises, Getting Your Organization Unstuck, and Emerging Victorious.
