Kyoko Tanihara loves books, but working at Musashino Bookshop is becoming increasingly frustrating. Instead of spending her days sharing stories she loves with customers, she finds herself constantly exasperated by her manager, Takeru Yamamoto. From his obsession with self-help books to his awkward comments and baffling decisions, everything he does seems to stand in the way of Kyoko's ambitions. As the bookstore struggles with workplace tensions, demanding customers and difficult encounters with authors, Kyoko begins to question whether she can continue doing a job that she loves under such infuriating circumstances. Then a book that speaks directly to her frustrations offers an unexpected perspective, raising the possibility that her manager may not be quite as foolish as she believes.
Written by Kazumasa Hayami and translated from Japanese by Haydn Trowell, this witty contemporary novel combines workplace comedy with an affectionate exploration of bookselling and the power of storytelling. Through Kyoko's candid observations, exasperating encounters and determination to share the right book with the right reader, the story captures the absurdities of office life while exploring the complicated relationships between colleagues. Beneath its sharp humour lies a thoughtful message about understanding others, reconsidering first impressions and finding meaning in work that matters to us. Entertaining, perceptive and warmly human, this novel offers a satisfying reading experience for anyone who has struggled with a difficult manager, worked in customer service or found comfort and connection through books.
